For example, I will hem a circle skirt by pressing up 3/8", pressing up 3/8" again (to hide the raw edge), and sewing closed. A straight skirt has a deeper hem in it--about 2". Any dress or skirt constructed out of silk charmeuse is run through a serger where a " rolled hem " stitch is applied (I'll post about that in a week or two)
